Fountain pens and happiness

February 27, 2008

This article about the “King of Fountain Pens” makes me rather happy. It combines many of my favourite things: Cute old men, adorable Japanese men, pictures of a workman’s hands, fine craftsmanship and fountain pens. I really do miss writing with fountain pens. I’ve been having a love affair with the simple Bic ballpoints over the past few years, as I enjoy their drag on the page, but I think I might revert to fountain pens, like I used to have to use back at school in Italy.

I feel you. I made my dad bring me velvety Clair Fontaine A4 notebooks, petits carreaux. I also especially miss the hardened callus on my middle finger, often stained a blotchy blue. I feel that typing on a computer all day makes one go soft, physically and mentally…

You should give fountains a try again. Its like running into an old friend that you haven’t seen in ages. You need not spend a fortune, but get a quality pen such as pelican (or pelicano the school pen) or a solid parker. Better yet, find a Pen show and spend the day.
